Quantum Physics: A New Scientific Foundation for Integrative Medicine

A New Scientific Foundation for Integrative MedicineScience defines the premise upon which our understanding of reality is based. Traditionalists have declared that conventional Western medicine is the only scientific medicine. The current medical system is based upon a materialistic model incorporating Darwinist theories of evolution, Newtonian physics, chemistry, and physical (elementary particle level) anatomy and physiology. However, through explorations and observations of the behavior of particles at the subatomic level, science has evolved. Fifty years ago, quantum physics emerged as a new scientific standard and model of understanding of reality. It has revolutionized our society on many levels, sparking discussions of science vs. spirituality/consciousness; transforming the core of our society. It is now time to redefine a form of integrative medicine based on the new scientific model of understanding of the universe according to quantum physics – Integrative Quantum Medicine.

Through the principles of quantum physics we can explain how ancient traditions of healing such as Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture, Ayurvedic Medicine, and modalities such as Homeopathy and Naturopathy, work with the body’s subtle energy systems such as ch’i, prana, and vital force energy. A leading quantum physicist, Amit Goswami, PhD., has already laid the foundation for this in his book, The Quantum Doctor, a physicist’s guide to health and healing. In the future we expect that medical universities will be incorporating this new quantum science as part of an integrative vision of medicine which combines conventional and alternative healing traditions. Quantum University, a leader in education in the fields of Holistic and Integrative Medicine, has already incorporated these fundamental principles of quantum physics into its curriculum.

Integrative Quantum Medicine is not only the key to solving the current healthcare crisis, but it will also lead to a new vision of integrative healthcare not based on disease, but on the full potentiality of the individual. Our understanding of the human body will expand to include the body’s subtle energy systems, and mental and emotional connections to the physical body. How the mind works can be explored from a non-dualistic viewpoint, compared to the dualistic philosophy used today. It will open the door to creative new approaches to healing that have the opportunity to solve problems still unresolved by conventional medicine, specifically in the areas of chronic and degenerative diseases.

It’ a wonderful exercise to reflect on the thinking of IQUIM’s founder, Dr. Paul. Philosophic inquiry has historically provided a basic, necessary and vital kind of freedom to place into question that which has been considered to be the natural order of things. Certainly, one might question what in the world could philosophy offer that might be of relevance to practising medicine? After all, even Alternative Medicine to a great extent, has already succumbed to the dominant world view represented by the Medical Model, with its underlying, often unnoticed and unchallenged assumptions.

These hidden assumptions: determinism, linear time, universalism, reductive-atomism, and materiality have had the unfortunate consequence of positing much of Alternative Medicine in the same camp as biology and medicine. However, this has resulted in increasing patient resistance to the Western Medical Model. Furthermore, as have many of their patients, some clinicians are beginning now to question Modern Medicine’s therapeutic results, especially in treating chronic disease and psychosomatic conditions. Such questioning, has lent itself to a certain uncertainty (a healthy state) and opened the door to a rethinking of the thinking underlying our chosen approach(es) to therapy.

In questioning our thinking and even our rethinking, we are able to ask various questions such as:

1) Does cause always precede effect?
2) Does the past always determine the present?
3) What if, in the dyadic therapeutic process, cure precedes cause and cause precedes cure, at the same time?
4) Is the intervention an evocative response to what precedes it?
5) Do linear and universal assumptions of time, location, and causation still cloud our clinical thinking?

Aiding us in our questioning, the tool of Quantum Physics provides much hope. Quantum theory holds the promise of helping us escape the ontological prison imposed by classical physics in which we objectify our observation experiences as events in a real world. In quantum theory, a single superposition state can give rise to multiple observation experiences, thereby, opening the door to confounding the classically determinate states that obtain in the world prior to and independent of our acts of observation.

This ongoing questioning and rethinking of our premises represents a most basic, necessary and vital kind of freedom. Fortuitously, Dr. Paul has taken a leading role in this revolution by establishing IQUIM as a leading educational forum for those willing to place into question their cherished assumptions regarding theory, research, and practice. What IQUIM offers is a comprehensive and scientifically grounded theory of health and healthy functioning, thereby, illuminating the dynamic interactions of the body-mind and spirit in both the personal and social bodies. For anyone harbouring even the slightest resistance to modern Western Medicine, IQUIM offers a new vision of what an Integrated Model of Holistic Medicine has to offer.

In a world seeking instant solutions and magic bullets to remedy its increasingly chronic healthcare challenges, it’s hardly surprising that healthcare practitioners of all stripes are following in lemming-like fashion, a conventional model of medicine more focused on alleviating disease symptoms than the symptoms’ underlying causes. While alternative medicine practitioners may feel smug in consulting their favorite alternative to mainstream medicine’s vaunted “Physicians’ Desk Reference,” in their efforts to go natural, this is still nothing other than a shotgun, cookbook approach to healthcare treatment. Without proper evaluation, history-taking, and an empirically verifiable systematic approach to treatment, the multi-factorial causes underlying almost all chronic conditions would remain even if some temporary symptomatic relief were achieved.

It is much too easy to bandy about terms like “quantum medicine” and “integrative medicine” without fully realizing what they mean. Furthermore, no one will become a qualified “doctor” simply because they theoretically understand what such terms mean. Without, a full complement of therapeutic tools at one’s disposal, a solid philosophical understanding of health, and a fund of practical knowledge which is both wide and deep, the promise offered by the quantum approach to integrative medicine will remain largely unrealized. Furthermore, as Dr. Drouin points out, our credibility as CAM practitioners depends on a systematic approach to client evaluation and treatment.

I can’t but echo everything Dr. Drouin has said with the caveat that none of us can escape the reality of the risk associated with providing alternative health care related services. It seems only prudent to seek out the best training and orientation possible in preparing ourselves to practice in these increasingly litigious times. IQUIM honestly and ethically offers the much needed training while providing an ongoing real-world orientation to its students. Even more remarkable, despite offering a visionary approach to a natural integrative medicine based on quantum physics, IQUIM refuses to fossilize their approach. Instead, reflecting the humility of its founder, IQUIM enlists the help of all its community members, both faculty and students, in its ongoing effort to co-create the integrative medicine of the future. We who believe that the final solutions to integrative medicine have yet to be fully realized are fortunate to be part of such community where academic freedom is encouraged in pursuit of those solutions.
